#master intention for #ruling faculty

The master intention (Encheiridion.1):

  1. say to any harsh impression: “you are but an impression, and not at all what you appear to be”
  2. examine the impression by rules:
    • not up to us? (Ench.1)
      • does the impression concern something that is not up to us? like disease, value, beauty, reputation, etc.

up to us not up to us
        my avoidance/judgement/emotion to disease disease
        my desire/judgement for value value
my movement/rejection towards having beauty beauty
          reputation
      • if it is not to us, say “it does not concern me” (that it cannot do damage or bring good to things of your concern)

(still, you may do thing about it; if you have a physical condition, it is then appropriate that you go to the doctor if you can; but it do not concern you in that it is incapable of harming you nor damaging you nor bring you happiness)

    • avoid only the internal vice and desire nothing (Ench.1)
      • is the impression an aversion to an external, or a desire of anything?
      • if it is, discard it;
    • What faculty deals with this? (Ench.10)

      impression faculty
      (desire for) fair man/woman continence
      (aversion for) labour/pain endurance
      abusive words patience
      • and what are the faculties? each a set of moeral theorems on conception about the impression and appropriate actions

e.g. endurance tells, all indifferent is to be endured, and no vice should be endured; and to endure is to not avoid.

labour/pain is indifferent, and thus should be endured, should not be avoided; and no action should be done in their premises.

        The format is in general

        1. recognize the impression as a thing (desire, connotation, indifferent, etc.)
        2. invoke some assertions on the impression, usually about properties of concern .
        3. infer some actions in reaction of the impression, usually about actions of concern.
